Committees

The Association has many volunteers who take an active role in their profession by serving on a BAPO Committee. The seven specific standing Committees:

Technician

The Executive Committee is nominated and voted for by the membership and all Full and Associate members are eligible to be elected. The make up of the committee is ten Full member seats, one Technician and one Assistant seat. To become involved with the work of a Committee please contact the Secretariat Manager or one of the existing committee chairs.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee (EC) is accountable to and acts with the authority of the Members. It develops the strategy, policy and direction of the Association and ensures that the Member’s interests are represented in all areas.

Chair – Peter Honeycombe

Peter took the role of Chair in March 2010. Peter is the Orthotic manager for Basingstoke and North Hampshire Foundation Trust.  He believes that it is essential for Prothetists and Orthotists  to collectively promote the unique qualities of their profession in order  to  develop its role within the modern Health Care environment.  This doesn't involve building barricades but bridges so that we can all share in the opportunities of a flexible professional workforce.


Vice Chair – Juliet Bell

Juliet was elected onto EC in 2007and served as Secretary to the Association for one year.  Juliet qualified from Salford University in 2002 and now works as Orthotics Service Manager at Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Secretary – Liz Thomas

Liz is a senior Orthotist working at Derby Hosptials NHS trust, she has a particular intrests in talapies and Rheumatolgy.  Liz qualified from Salford University in 2002.  She was elected onto EC 3 years ago and has been secretary for 18 months.

Treasurer - Nigel Jones

Nigel was elected to the EC in 2002.  He has been active as the Technician's Committee Liaison and the BAPO Representative on the Orthotics External Reference Group. He became Treasurer in 2004 and chairs the Finance sub-committee, which scrutinises contracts, vets proposals for spending Association money, sets budgets and produces financial data to facilitate EC decision making. Nigel is a Senior Orthotist with Trulife, and has a particular interest in paediatric orthotics.

Other Committee Members

The other EC members are:  Ian Adam (Technician), Jonathan Bull, Diana Currie (Assistant), Yvonne McIntosh, Steve Mottram,  Lorna Graham, Secretariat Manager also attends all EC meetings as an observer and note taker.

Conference Committee

The Conference Committee (CC) organises BAPO’s Annual Conference. This is the leading annual clinical forum and trade exhibition for prosthetics and orthotics in the United Kingdom. It attracts both UK and international delegates and exhibitors. Conference consists of 4 elements. Primarily it is an educational seminar with trade exhibition and social event. Opportunity is also taken for the Annual general Meeting at the same event. It is the ideal opportunity for those involved in all aspects of prosthetics and orthotics to learn from highly regarded speakers, seek the latest research, attend product demonstrations, take part in interactive workshops, discuss professional issues and meet with friends and colleagues.

Conference Committee Chair – Denise Law

Denise qualified from Strathclyde University in 2001. She has worked as an Orthotist for the NHS since qualifying and is currently the principal orthotist at Exeter Mobility Centre. She joined the conference committee in 2008 and was elected chair this year. 

Education Committee

The Education Committee addresses all of the Association's education-related issues. They organise various post-graduate short courses in Prosthetics and Orthotics and related topics for BAPO members and other healthcare professionals. The Committee promotes and supports Continuing Professional Development and to this end has produced a CPD portfolio for members and has run several courses on this issue.

Education Committee Chair – Martin Matthews

Martin Matthews qualified as an Orthotist in 1981 from Salford College of Technology (now University of Salford). He quickly developed an interest in paediatrics with a keen interest in scoliosis management and neurological dysfunction. After his move to Norwich in 1991 he developed his expertise in scoliosis management and having trained in Boston he returned to the UK to run Boston Brace training courses on a yearly basis since then.
In 1996 he became involved in the research and development of dynamic Lycra orthoses and was tasked with providing the evidence for the new orthotic concept of treatment. In 2000 he began his research masters degree at the University of East Anglia researching the use of dynamic Lycra orthoses in the treatment of diplegic crouch gait walkers. He has had papers published on neurological AFOs, the use of Lycra orthoses in hand function and recently in the ISPO journal a paper on Scoliosis management using dynamic Lycra orthoses.

Professional Affairs Committee

This Committee deals with the professional issues that affect the Association and its members. It carefully considers issues that have a direct bearing on the daily practice of Prosthetists, Orthotists, Technicians and Assistants. The Professional Affairs Committee is responsible for the publication and development of our guidelines and ethical code and is leading BAPO's clinical effectiveness agenda. The Committee has published many working documents (found on this website), including a series of Guidelines for Best Practice, a Safety Document and an Ethical Code. They are currently working on Fellowship Guidelines and CPD Guidelines.

Professional Affairs Committee Lead - Simon Dickinson

Simon Dickinson qualified as a Prosthetist/Orthotist in 1996 from Salford University.  He initially worked as an Orthotist in Oxford before moving to the West Midlands.  He is currently the Orthotic Clinical Lead for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trusts and manages a team of 16.  Simon has lectured many times at BAPO conferences and also at many other conferences.  Simon specialises in lower limb biomechanics and its practical applications relating to orthotics and rehabilitation.  He is very pro-active in promoting the role of the Orthotist and with improving orthotic practice. 


Editorial Committee

The Editorial Committee is responsible for producing our magazine, BAPOmag. This is issued three times a year and is free to all BAPO members. The magazine is also available by subscription to other interested parties. The Committee produces and edits the content and organises the printing and distribution of the magazine.

Editorial Committee Chair - Alison Morton

Alison is a past Secretary of one of BAPO's forerunners, the Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists, and became Editor of BAPOmag in 2004. Alison is a Senior Prosthetist, working for the West of Scotland consortium based at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.

Technician Committee

The Technician's Committee works closely with many of our other standing committees. There  main aim is to raise the profile of technical issues within the association.  We plan and run training courses and put together a Technical Programme at our annual Conference.

Technician Committee Chair - Ian Adam

Ian is a long-standing member of the Technician's Committee, becoming its Chair in 2003 He represent the technicians on the EC committee and works closely with the Education Committee developing courses for Technicians. Ian is a Senior Orthotics Technician working at Yorkhill Children's Hospital in Glasgow.

BAPO Staff

Secretariat Manager - Lorna Graham

Lorna manages the busy Secretariat and ensures that the highest professional standards are upheld. She is responsible for co-ordinating the business of BAPO and works closely with the Chair, office bearers and all the various committees to ensure the business of the Association is effectively and efficiently conducted. Lorna manages the Secretariat budget, ensures appropriate administrative support is provided for the Association's activities, and prioritises workflow as necessary.

Administrator - Catherine Sweeney

Catherine is the first person most callers will speak to when they telephone the office. In addition to reception and general administration duties, Catherine plays a vital role in the management of membership records, our job advertisement and Product Literature Distribution.

Administrator - Morag Wilson

Morag is employed in a part-time position and assists Catherine in the day to day reception and general administration duties.  She offers administration support to OETT, Education and Editorial Committees. Morag plays a vital role and is the main contact in the administration for Conference.
